Historical Description | Sint Eustatius is one of the three Dutch BES islands in the Caribbean. The neighboring islands are St. Kitts in the southeast, Saint-Barthélemy and Sint Maarten/St. Martin in the north and Saba in the northwest. Its name refers to Eustachius, a Christian martyr and saint. Sint Eustatius, like Saba and Sint Maarten/St. Martin, belongs to the Leeward Islands and thus to the Netherlands Antilles, with the capital Oranjestad. Christopher Columbus probably passed the island on his second voyage in November 1493. It was first mentioned by name in 1595 by Francis Drake and John Hawkins. Zeeland merchants colonized the island in 1636 with the permission of the Dutch West India Company. From 1682, the neighboring territories of Saba and (from 1703) Sint Maarten were also administered from the colony, which by then was profiting from trade and the cultivation of sugar, tobacco and cotton. In the 18th century, the island was probably the most important trading center of the Netherlands in the Caribbean. At that time, it was also known as Golden Rock due to its immense prosperity. The streets were lined with numerous warehouses, most of which have since fallen into disrepair. |
