Historical Description | In 1856, the first Mexican gold miners arrived in Cheyenne Indian territory. When gold was found on the South Platte River in 1858, the region began to prosper. Gold seekers pushed into the region and a first modest settlement was established, but it was soon abandoned. However, when more gold was discovered a little further south, at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, two new settlements were established: Auraria (now the Unicampus) and St. Charles City. Shortly thereafter, William H. Larimer founded Denver City, named for a former governor of Kansas Territory, of which Colorado was then a part. In 1861, residents of the towns joined together to form a city of 6,000. The combined town was named Denver City. |
