Luyken (1649-1712)

Jan Luyken (1649- 1712) was a Dutch poet, graphic artist and illustrator. At the age of 18, Jan Luyken was apprenticed to the painter Martin Saeghmolen. But after his death in 1669, with the help of the engraver Coenraet Decker, he turned to the art of copperplate engraving and etching, in which he made a name for himself during his lifetime. He made his debut with four prints, which were published separately. In 1678, the first book, Schat der Zielen (Treasure of Souls) with engravings by Jan Luyken, was published. The many works that followed also served primarily to illustrate books. Luyken worked for numerous publishers in and outside Amsterdam. Today, more than 3,000 engravings by him are counted, a part of them can be found in Dutch museums. Best known are his works for the second edition of the Martyrs' Mirror, a history of Christian martyrs from the apostles to the Christians of the 16th century, published in 1685, and for the book of estates by the Nuremberg engraver and publisher Christoph Weigel from 1698, which also included many engravings from the book Spiegel van het menselyk bedryf, published by Jan Luyken together with his son Kaspar in 1694.
