Historical Description

Grave is a district of the municipality of Land van Cuijk in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. The old fortified town of Grave, which already had town rights around 1250, was the seat of the Lords of Cuijk or Kuyk in the 14th century. John of Cuijk had the town walled in 1285. Strategically important, Grave was often a bone of contention between the Duchy of Guelders and the Duchy of Brabant between 1300 and 1550. During the Dutch War (1672-1678) Grave came into the hands of the French in July 1672 after a siege lasting several months. In 1814 the French garrison there surrendered to the Allies. Grave often suffered from floods of the Meuse river, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is not far from the Beerse Overlaat area, which was often deliberately abandoned to the water until about 1920.
