Historical Description

The Hypatius chronicle already mentions the year 990 as the year of Vladimir's foundation by the Kiev prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich. However, the official year of foundation is considered to be 1108, when the Prince of Chernigov Vladimir Monomakh had the city fortified. During the following years, the city experienced its heyday as the seat of government of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, which ended abruptly with its capture and destruction by troops of the Golden Horde led by Batu Khan in 1238. Due to the defeat of the Russian forces at the Battle of Sit and the death of Grand Duke Yuri II. Vsevolodovich, the entire principality fell under the influence of the Tatars and disintegrated into several small principalities. It was not until the 18th century that the city experienced a revival, having become the provincial capital in 1719. In 1861 Vladimir received a railroad connection on the newly opened line from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod. From 1796 to 1929 it was the capital of the Vladimir Governorate.
