View of Captain Cook's anchorage in Kealakekua Bay (Karakakooa Bay) in Hawaii. It shows dozens of Native Hawaiian canoes and sailboats. The view is also notable in that it is the earliest printed image to depict a surfboard. From an English edition of Cook's account of his 3rd voyage. The scene was originally sketched by John Webber, a talented young artist who accompanied Captain James Cook on his third voyage to the Pacific in 1776-1780. | |
