Historical Description

Valparaíso was founded in the 16th century by Spanish explorers and quickly developed into an important port. In the 19th century, the city experienced a period of prosperity, as it became a key trading hub for ships traveling between Europe and the west coast of the Americas. With the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, Valparaíso lost much of its economic importance, but it remained an important cultural center.
