Historical Description

Circassians or Circassians are a Caucasian people who call themselves Adyge. After Timur's war campaigns, the territorial expansion of the tribes, now called Circassians or Adygeians in the sources, began in the 14th/15th century. They initially settled along the western Caucasus northward to the lower Don, and in some cases even into the Crimea. Especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Crimean Khanate, the Nogai and their hegemonic power, the Ottoman Empire, which had conquered some fortresses on the coast from the Genoese, waged several wars against the Circassians, who thus had to retreat behind the Kuban. As a result of the Caucasian War, since 1864 the vast majority of Circassians or people of Circassian origin have been living in the diaspora in Middle Eastern and Balkan states, some of them emigrating to other countries in more recent times. The largest groups are Circassians in Turkey, Syria and Jordan.
