Historical Description

San Antonio is the oldest city in Texas. The area was first explored by a Spanish advance party in 1691. The name dates back to St. Anthony of Padua, on whose feast day the missionaries stopped in the area. At a military base to protect the missionaries, the settlement of San Antonio de Béxar was founded in 1735, the starting point of the present city. The city was initially part of the Spanish colonial empire (Viceroyalty of New Spain) and then from 1821 belonged to Mexico, which became independent.
