Historical Description

Ma'rib was the capital of the Kingdom of Sheba in ancient times since the 8th century B.C. It is located about 100 km east of Sanaa in Yemen. The ancient city was located in a plain in the dry delta of Wadi Adhana. After a fortified settlement existed in Ma'rib since the 3rd millennium B.C., the place experienced a strong boom with the establishment of the Incense Road. Ma'rib had an acropolis on which the palaces and temples of the rulers were located. Ma'rib's decline eventually began with the decline of trade on the Frankincense Road after the Ptolemies and Romans opened up the sea route through the Red Sea, allowing them to avoid the high tariffs and duties on the land route. After several dam breaches had occurred since the 4th century and Ma'rib also lost its capital status after the conquest by the Himyars, the city was abandoned after another dam breach in 572. n modern times, the legendary Ma'rib was the destination of several voyages of exploration. The first to reach the ruined city was the Frenchman Joseph Arnaud in 1843.
