Historical Description

The Baía de Nossa Senhora do Desterro is located in southern Brazil in the state of Santa Catarina and today belongs to the city of Florianópolis. The bay was named in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers and dedicated to the Virgin Mary as “Nossa Senhora do Desterro” (“Our Lady of Exile”). In the 17th and 18th centuries, a settlement developed along the bay, initially known as Desterro. Due to its protected location, the bay became an important base for trade and military activities. During the colonial period, several fortresses were built to defend the coast. In 1894, the city was renamed Florianópolis as part of political changes.
