Historical Description

Louis XVIII (1755–1824) was King of France and Navarre from 1814 to 1824, with an interruption during the Hundred Days in 1815, when Napoleon Bonaparte briefly returned to power. After Napoleon’s final defeat, Louis XVIII restored the Bourbon monarchy and ruled as a constitutional monarch under the Charter of 1814. His reign was marked by an effort to reconcile the achievements of the French Revolution with traditional monarchy and to stabilize France politically after the Napoleonic Wars.
