Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King and one of the most important French cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century. Bellin produced a substantial number of important separately issued maps, particularly reflecting continuing discoveries and political events in the Americas.

Eggert Olafsen (1726 - 1768), was member of the Danish Academy of Sciences. In 1752, went on a mission to Iceland in order to gather information on the scientific, economic and political nature of the island. "Atlas du Voyage en Islande, fair par ordre de S.M. Danoise" was a later French edition of this voyage and consists of many fine engravings depicting Iceland's distinctive landscape, people, geology, birdlife and fish and this large scale map. Erichsen and Schoemming's map shows district divisions and includes glaciers, topography, towns, lakes.
