Historical Description | Roulette is a chance-based casino game that originated in 18th-century France. The mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal experimented with spinning wheels in his research on perpetual motion machines, which later inspired the concept of the roulette wheel. Roulette became a regular feature in French casinos in the 1790s. The classic rules with a single zero (0) were established to give the casino a slight advantage. In the 19th century, the game spread throughout Europe, with Germany, Italy, and England developing their own variants. In American casinos during the 19th century, a double zero (00) was added, increasing the house edge. This version is now known as American Roulette, while the original variant is called European Roulette. |
