Historical Description | The Battle of Hanau took place on 30–31 October 1813 and was one of the last major battles of the War of the Sixth Coalition. Following his defeat at the Battle of Leipzig, Napoleon Bonaparte attempted to retreat with his army to France. Near Hanau, his forces encountered an Austrian-Bavarian army commanded by General Karl Philipp von Wrede. Napoleon succeeded in breaking through the opposing lines and continuing his retreat. Although the battle was a tactical victory for Napoleon, it could not prevent the collapse of his empire. For this reason, the Battle of Hanau is regarded as one of the final significant engagements of the Napoleonic Wars. |
