Historical Description

Portuguese immigrants from the Azores, led by José da Silva Pais, settled in the Santa Catarina region as early as 1742. Porto Alegre was initially founded in 1772 by these Portuguese immigrants as Pôrto dos Casais, actually as Freguesia de São Francisco do Porto dos Casais. In the 19th century, many Germans, Poles and Italians came to the city and settled there. Município de Porto Alegre is the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is one of the largest cities in Brazil and an economic and cultural centre of the southern part of the country.
