Two views on one sheet, showing the city Russe ( bulg. Pyce) at the river Donau.Ruse is the fifth largest city in Bulgaria. During Ottoman rule, the invaders destroyed the town, reacting to a 1595 unsuccessful liberation attempt by a joint Vlach-Bulgarian army, led by Michael the Brave. After its rebuilding in the following years, Ruse was dubbed Rusçuk (Turkish for ;little Ruse;) and had again expanded into a large fortress by the 18th century.---The fortress Belogradtschik (Weiße Burg). Belogradchik is a town in Vidin Province, Northwestern Bulgaria, the administrative centre of the homonymous Belogradchik Municipality. The town, whose name literally means ;small white town,; is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains just east of the Serbian border and about 50 km south of the Danube River. The town is close to the Belogradchik Rocks
