Description | Two views on one sheet, showing the city Russe ( bulg. Pyce) at the river Donau.Ruse is the fifth largest city in Bulgaria. During Ottoman rule, the invaders destroyed the town, reacting to a 1595 unsuccessful liberation attempt by a joint Vlach-Bulgarian army, led by Michael the Brave. After its rebuilding in the following years, Ruse was dubbed Rusçuk (Turkish for ;little Ruse;) and had again expanded into a large fortress by the 18th century.---The fortress Belogradtschik (Weiße Burg). Belogradchik is a town in Vidin Province, Northwestern Bulgaria, the administrative centre of the homonymous Belogradchik Municipality. The town, whose name literally means ;small white town,; is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains just east of the Serbian border and about 50 km south of the Danube River.
