Historical Description

Saint Paul's history begins in the early 19th century, when the first traders, explorers and missionaries migrated from southern Canada and settled in the area of the present city. They were mostly of French origin and sought the protection of nearby Fort Snelling. Favored by its location on the Mississippi River and Minnesota River, a commercial center developed. In 1841, Galtier founded a church there named Saint Paul, after which the settlement was also named. In the following years, St. Paul continued to grow and became an independent city and the capital of Minnesota in 1854.
