Historical Description

The first mention of the area around Getaria comes from maps of the Greeks and Romans. Getaria was founded in 1209 by King Alfonso VIII of Castile. The port is protected by a conspicuous peninsula that runs out into the high rock Mont San Anton (a former island). From this port the Basques set out as early as the 14th century to fish and whale to Newfoundland, Greenland and Iceland. In 1638, a naval battle took place off Getaria between the Spanish and French navies.
