Historical Description

Stanley Harbour and Port William are located on the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Stanley Harbour forms the sheltered inner harbor of the capital, Stanley, while Port William is the larger natural bay in front of it. In the 19th century, both harbors developed into important stops for ships on trade routes around Cape Horn. Due to their protected location, they served as supply and naval bases for the British Navy. During the Falklands War in 1982, the area once again played a strategic role. Today, Stanley Harbour and Port William are important centers for fishing, supply vessels, and tourism in the Falkland Islands.
