The German publishing company Bibliographisches Institut was founded 1826 in Gotha by Joseph Meyer, moved 1828 to Hildburghausen and 1874 to Leipzig. Its production over the years includes such well-known titles as Meyers Lexikon.

Historical Description

The name of the lake is first recorded in the form Tegarinseo from the year 796, when the princely brothers Oatkar and Adalbert founded a monastery on the “tegarin seo”, which is Old High German and means large lake. A Celtic word stem with the meaning lord or prince is possible, but also the origin of the neighboring place names Tegernbach or Tegerndorf, which is assumed to come from Lehm-Tiegel. A historical source from the 19th century traces the name back to the Tigurin people. The history of Lake Tegernsee does not begin until the beginning of the 6th century, when the Bavarian tribal union emerged as a political unit and the Agilolfinger's claim to power was consolidated. The history of Lake Tegernsee is closely linked to that of the monastery of the same name. The two princely brothers and possible founders of the Tegernsee monastery, Adalbert and Oatkar, who founded a church on the “tegarin seo” and thus probably gave the lake its name in the 8th century, are often mentioned in the literature. The monastery was the only landowner on Lake Tegernsee and oversaw the clearing and development of the land.
