Historical Description

The Battle of Dunkirk in October 1639 was a naval engagement during the Eighty Years' War, fought on 18 October 1639 off the coast near Dunkirk. The Spanish fleet attempted to break through from Dunkirk to Flanders with reinforcements and supplies. However, it was intercepted by the Dutch fleet under Admiral Maarten Tromp. The Dutch achieved a clear victory, further weakening Spanish naval power in the region and significantly hindering Spanish supply lines to Flanders. This battle served as a prelude to the decisive Battle of the Downs a few days later, on 21 October 1639.
