Historical Description

Between 1393 and 1396, all of Bulgaria came under Ottoman rule, which lasted almost 500 years. In 1444 the attempt to liberate Bulgaria by a Polish-Hungarian army under Władysław III failed. Parts of the Bulgarian population converted to Islam in the following centuries. Around 1800 the intellectual-national resistance arose with the demand for independence. An era of Bulgarian national revival came about in Bulgaria. Similar to Western Europe, it drew on ancient and earlier Bulgarian and Byzantine traditions, but fought against the Hellenization of society.
