Historical Description | Peterwardein (today Petrovaradin) is located on the right bank of the Danube River opposite Novi Sad in Serbia. The town is especially known for its imposing Petrovaradin Fortress, which was built in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Habsburgs as a defensive stronghold against the Ottoman Empire. The fortress played a crucial role in the Battle of Peterwardein in 1716, where Habsburg forces under Prince Eugene of Savoy achieved a decisive victory over the Ottomans. Over the centuries, Peterwardein developed into a strategically important military and commercial center. Today, the fortress is a significant cultural landmark and hosts events such as the EXIT music festival. |
