Historical Description

The Elbe Falls are located just one kilometer behind the source of the Elbe. Here, the young Elbe plunges 45 meters down into the Elbe bed and then rushes foaming over a 200-meter-long section of rapids through the rocky Elbe bed. The Elbe Falls are located not far from the unmistakable Labská bouda. As the river does not carry much water at this point, the waterfall used to be made more attractive with the help of a water surge, the water for which was dammed up in a water basin above the waterfall and released to the delight of hikers. This reservoir was built by Josef Šír, the owner of the Elbe Falls chalet at the time. This tourist attraction was later abandoned for nature conservation reasons.
