Historical Description | The Castle of San Giovanni d’Acri is located in the city of Acre (today Akko) in northern Israel. It was built and expanded in the 12th century by the Knights of the Order of St. John (Hospitallers) during the time of the Crusades. The fortress served as an important military and religious base for the Crusaders in the Holy Land and was one of the most significant defensive structures against the Muslim armies. After the capture of Acre by the Mamluks in 1291, the castle fell, marking the end of the Crusader states in the Holy Land. Today, the fortress is part of the UNESCO World Heritage and is one of the best-preserved Crusader castles worldwide. |
