Historical Description

Bison are common wild cattle in the northern hemisphere. Today there are two representatives, the American bison (Bos bison) and the European bison (Bos bonasus). The original Eurasian bison evolved as it spread from northern India to the west and across the vast Asian steppes. The now extinct mountain bison also evolved in the Caucasus. Bison originally evolved in Eurasia. The steppe bison crossed the land bridge between Siberia and Alaska (today's Bering Strait) during the Ice Age (in the early to middle Pleistocene) and colonized the northernmost parts of North America. Several species evolved from it, which conquered the more southerly parts of the continent in two successive waves of immigration.
