Hupp (1859-1859)

Otto Hupp's Munich calendar is "for us today the epitome of everything permanent in the Munich movement of the eighties, mixed from Gothic and Renaissance ... Undeniably, however, Otto Hupp was the great heraldic draughtsman and calendar man up to the threshold of the present day". The graphic artist and heraldist Otto Hupp designed these calendars from 1885 to 1936. The calendars of the years 1885 to 1894 showed monthly coats of arms with the signs of the zodiac. It was not until 1895 that Otto Hupp's idea of using the coats of arms of the German royal houses instead of the monthly signs was successful, followed by an annual double-page coat of arms of a German state and then twelve coats of arms of each of the major noble families.

Historical Description

The Munich Calendar, a collection of coats of arms, so to speak, was published annually by the Verlagsanstalt München/Regensburg (Verlag G. J. Manz) with the years 1885-1936 excluding 1933. It was published by Otto Hupp. The impetus for this came in 1884 from the Munich Central Association for Church Construction. To increase its income, the calendar was launched with the Münchner Kindl on the title page. The first volume was published with 5,000 copies and was sold out after a few months. Circulation peaked at 17,000 copies in 1914, after which it steadily declined. Otto Hupp self-published the volumes 1934 to 1936 with a somewhat different appearance. In a modified form 1935 - a description by Joachim v. Roy (23.11.2008): He shows at the beginning (on two pages) the 4 coats of arms of the "secular electors of the old empire" and shows afterwards in the months January to December - in conventional way - the coats of arms of the noble families Blomberg, Falkenstein-Minzenberg, Gröning, Gundelfingen, Helldorff, Keyserlingk, v. der Lancken, Lilien, Manderscheid-Blankenheim, Tschammer, Ziegenhain and Zimmern. This is followed by the usual "Genealogical Explanations" and, as a special feature, a contribution by Otto Hupp on the "History of the Munich Calendar". This is followed - as usual - by the "Index of coats of arms brought so far". In 1998, the publisher discontinued the book production.
