Historical Description

The discourse on the Last Judgement, including the judgment of the Son of Man over the nations, is a special passage in the Gospel according to Matthew. It deals with the Last Judgement and forms the conclusion of a longer discourse by Jesus, which is recorded in the 24th and 25th chapters of the Gospel of Matthew and is referred to as the “Last Judgement Discourse” or “eschatological discourse” mainly because of the concluding parable of the Last Judgement. When the Son of Man returns, he will gather all the nations and place them on his left and right respectively. The King will then invite those on his right into the kingdom of God. He will justify this by saying that they had mercy on him when he needed help. When asked when they have seen him in such need, the king will answer that what you do to another person, you ultimately do to him. In the same way, he will then send those on his left away because they did not help him when he was in need. In response to the corresponding question as to when they had seen him in the aforementioned distress, the analogous answer is given that they should have shown this mercy to those in need on his behalf.
