Historical Description | Hamilton County is a county in the state of New York in the United States and lies entirely within the Adirondack Park, the largest protected area in the continental United States. The most striking feature of the landscape are the numerous lakes. They include the Hudson River, Black River and Raquette River. These lakes can be roughly divided into two groups. In the south of the county are Lake Pleasant, Sacandaga Lake and Piseco Lake, which together with several other bodies of water provide water for the Sacandaga River, a right tributary of the Hudson River, and in the north are Raquette Lake and Long Lake. From here, a series of lakes stretches northeast, which was named Eckford Chain in 1841 and is about five miles long. The uppermost lake was originally named Lake Janet after the wife of the zoologist on the expedition at the time and is now known as Blue Mountain Lake. |
