Historical Description

The first automobile with an internal combustion engine was built in 1885/86 by Carl Benz in Germany – the Benz Patent Motor Car No. 1. Around the same time, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were also working on motorized vehicles. In 1888, Bertha Benz, Carl's wife, undertook the first long-distance journey by automobile – a major milestone in automotive history. In the years that followed, the first car companies were founded, and with Ford’s introduction of assembly line production in 1913, the automobile became a mass-produced product.
