Plate 26 shows three splendid illustrations of I. Monkshood buttercup (lat. Ranunculus aconitifolius), II. troll flower (lat. Trollius euopaeurs), III. bulbous buttercup (lat. Ranunculus bulbosus). The troll flower owes its name to the old Germanic word troll, meaning ball, and not to the well-known Nordic spirits. The troll flower is on the “Red List” of endangered species in Germany. In 1613, the first edition of the magnificent work Hortus Eystettensis was published, produced by the pharmacist, botanist, collector, engraver and publisher Basilius Besler from Nuremberg-2013 was the 400th anniversary of the first edition!
