Title

I. Lichnis sylvestris flore pleno rubro / II. Lichnis Sylvestris flore pleno albo

Plate 250 shows two splendid illustrations of campanulas. I. Pink garden carnation, double (lat. Silene dioica), II. White garden carnation, double. The carnations (Caryophyllaceae) are a family in the order of the carnations (Caryophyllales) within the angiosperms (Magnoliopsida). They are mostly herbaceous plants with opposite, entire and sessile leaves and characteristic forked branching. The flowers are usually radially symmetrical and hermaphrodite, the fruits are mostly capsules. They occur worldwide in all climate zones. Most of their approximately 2200 species are found with a Holarctic distribution in the temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Varieties of many species are used as ornamental plants. In 1613, the first edition of the magnificent work Hortus Eystettensis was published, produced by the pharmacist, botanist, collector, engraver and publisher Basilius Besler from Nuremberg. 2013 was the 400th anniversary of the first edition!
