Plate 253 shows three splendid depictions of bearded carnations (lat. Dianthus barbatus, old German scarlet flowers from the genus Caryophyllaceae). The carnations (Caryophyllaceae) are a family in the order of the carnations (Caryophyllales) within the angiosperms (Magnoliopsida). They are mostly herbaceous plants with opposite, entire and sessile leaves and characteristic forked branching. The flowers are usually radially symmetrical and hermaphrodite, the fruits are mostly capsules. They occur worldwide in all climatic zones. Most of their approximately 2200 species are found with a Holarctic distribution in the temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Varieties of many species are used as ornamental plants. In 1613, the first edition of the magnificent work Hortus Eystettensis was published, produced by the pharmacist, botanist, collector, engraver and publisher Basilius Besler from Nuremberg. Anniversary of the first edition!
