Plate 173 shows three splendid illustrations of columbines of different colors. I. the star-shaped white spotted columbine, II. the blue columbine with anomalous flowers and III. the white columbine. White common columbine. There are around 120 columbine species, of which around 30 are found in Europe. This diversity did not exist in BESLER's time, and it seems that all the plants shown here are descended from a single wild species, the common columbine, Aquilegia vulgaris (lat.).
