Plate 125 shows three spring plants. I. calamus (lat. Acours calmus), II. leek gamander (lat. Teucrium scordium) and the noble or true gamander (lat. Teucrium chamaedrys). The rhizomes of calamus were already used in the Middle Ages for the production of perfumes and liqueurs (bitters). Germander II and III were used in folk medicine to treat digestive disorders and to heal wounds. In 1613, the first edition of the magnificent Hortus Eystettensis was published, produced by the pharmacist, botanist, collector, engraver and publisher Basilius Besler from Nuremberg. 2013 was the 400th anniversary of the first edition!
