Historical Description

Ephesus was a major ancient city on the western coast of Asia Minor, near the modern town of Selçuk in Turkey. It was located in the region of Ionia and was an important political, economic, and religious center. During the Hellenistic period and especially in the Roman era (1st century BC – 3rd century AD), Ephesus experienced its greatest prosperity. The city was famous for the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was also a significant center of early Christianity. From the 4th century AD onward, Ephesus declined due to earthquakes, the silting up of its harbor, and political changes. Today, Ephesus is one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
