Karl Eitel Friedrich of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1839–1914) was born in Sigmaringen and died in Sinaia. He was the son of Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Princess Josephine of Baden. In 1866, following the abdication of Alexandru Ioan Cuza and on the recommendation of Napoleon III, he was elected Prince of Romania by popular vote. He assumed office on October 23, 1866, taking the name Carol I. During his reign, Carol I modernized the country significantly. He implemented reforms in finance, the military, education, and infrastructure, modeled on Prussian examples. Under his leadership, Romania experienced a period of stability and modernization. In foreign policy, Carol I maintained close ties with Germany and Austria-Hungary. He was succeeded on the throne by his nephew, Ferdinand I. Carol I is regarded as the founding father of modern Romania.
