Friedrich August Herbig acquired the F. Schade publishing house in 1820 and founded the "Verlag von Friedrich August Herbig" in 1821, which soon established itself in Berlin’s Dorotheenstadt. His diverse publishing portfolio included titles such as Moritz' Götterlehre oder mythologische Dichtungen der Alten, Handbibliothek für Officiere, and Handbibliothek für Gärtner with contributions from notable figures like Bouché, as well as Reichard’s Passagier, one of Germany’s earliest major travel guides, also published in French and Russian. Particularly successful was the French school grammar entrusted to the publisher by Karl Ploetz in 1848, which went through many editions and secured the company’s wealth. By around 1845, the Herbig publishing house had moved near Potsdamer Tor. The Herbig household hosted notable guests including the Brothers Grimm, Achim and Bettina von Arnim, Schadow, Begas, and Felix Dahn, who was related to Herbig’s wife. In 1935, the Herbig Verlag was acquired by Dr. E. Winkler and the Walter Kahnert Verlag. | |
