Afferden, de (1653-1709)

Unfortunately, not much is known about Francisco de Afferden. He was born in Belgium and worked as secretary to Mary of Neuburg in Spain, the Queen of Spain. Francisco de Afferden was nevertheless an important cartographer and geographer of the 17th and 18th centuries. At a time when scientific progress was shaping geography and cartography, Afferden contributed to the dissemination of geographical knowledge. He created map works that not only included geographical information, but also political and cultural aspects of his time. It is assumed that his aim was to make geographical information accessible to a wider audience.

Historical Description

The Atlas by Francisco de Afferden is known for its precise and detailed maps. These are written in a mixture of Latin, Spanish, or other European languages to reflect the knowledge of the time. Many maps contain additional illustrations or embellishments to highlight not only the geographical but also the cultural significance of the depicted areas. Atlas Abreviado, meaning "abbreviated atlas," indicates that the atlas provides a compact collection of maps. The maps are concise and focus on the essentials. Compendiosa Geographia del Mundo Antiguo y Nuevo means "compact geography of the ancient and new world." It covers the geographical features of the ancient world, including classical old Europe, the Roman Empire, Greece, and Egypt. It also addresses the "New World," meaning the newly discovered territories of the Americas, Asia, and Africa, which were explored by European explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries. Notably, the voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and the newly discovered continents—especially America and other areas that were recognized following the great voyages of the Spaniards, Portuguese, and other European seafarers of the era.
