Title

Die Desinfektionsanstalt in Berlin. Nach einer Originalskizze von M. Zambony.

Description

Depiction of 4 cleaning processes in a ‘laundry’ disinfection centre in Berlin. Fig. 1 shows the exterior view in the courtyard of house no. 66 in Reichenberger Straße with loading ramp for transport carriages, Fig. 2 the storage rooms, Fig. 3 the two steam boilers for hot air and hot water and Fig. 4 hot air appliances which hold the objects to be disinfected. In 1865, King Ludwig II of founded the first Chair of Hygiene at the University of Munich under the direction of Max von Pettenkofer. Hygiene was thus finally established as an effective measure to prevent or contain the spread of diseases such as typhus, cholera, smallpox, dysentery and diphtheria. Public health care increasingly became the responsibility of the state. In 1875, the first disinfection centre was built in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The steam boilers could be opened on both sides; there was a dirty side and a clean side.
