Historical Description | The Hirschgarten is located west of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich and is part of the former Electoral and Royal hunting grounds. In the 17th century, under Elector Ferdinand Maria and later Elector Max Emanuel, the area was established as a deer park for courtly hunting. The park was used to keep deer, roe deer, and other game animals. Under King Maximilian III Joseph in the 18th century, the park was expanded and opened to the public. Walking paths and bridges were added, enhancing the natural landscape. The Hirschgarten remained a popular excursion destination for the people of Munich. Parts of the original hunting grounds were transformed into landscaped park areas. Today, the Hirschgarten at Nymphenburg is a public park with walking paths, ponds, and wildlife. It is especially popular in summer for walks and picnics, while the adjacent Hirschgarten beer garden is one of the largest in Munich. |
