Historical Description | In the Old Testament, Datan is the son of Eliab the Reubenite. Together with his brother Abiram and Korah, he rose up against Moses. Moses ended the uprising with divine support by calling for a divine judgment. They were dissatisfied with the religious supremacy of the two leaders, Moses and his brother Aaron. The rebels demanded equality for all Israelites before God and criticized the fact that Moses and Aaron allegedly placed themselves above the rest of the people. Both the 250 rebels and Aaron offered incense offerings. A fissure in the earth opened up and swallowed Korah and his clan. |
