Historical Description | The Dauphiné is a historical region in southeastern France with a long and distinct history. In antiquity, the area was inhabited by Gallic tribes and later became part of the Roman Empire. After the collapse of Rome, the region came under various rulers, including the Burgundians and the Franks. During the Middle Ages, the Dauphiné developed into an important principality of the Holy Roman Empire. Particularly influential was the period of the Dauphins of Viennois, after whom the region is named. In 1349, the Dauphiné was sold to the French Crown through the Treaty of Romans. From then on, the heir to the French throne bore the title “Dauphin”, giving the region great symbolic importance. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Dauphiné was a center of religious conflict between Catholics and Huguenots. In 1788, the events of the Day of the Tiles in Grenoble played a significant role as a precursor to the French Revolution. Today, the Dauphiné is no longer an administrative region but continues to live on culturally and historically, especially in the present-day departments of Isère, Drôme, and Hautes-Alpes. |
