Historical Description

Bassano del Grappa is an Italian town in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto region. Archaeological finds prove that it was settled from the second century onwards. Sources mention a castle and a parish church in 998. From 1175, the town belonged to Vicenza, later to Padua, until it came under Venetian rule in 1404. Bassano has been an important center of export-oriented wine production since the Middle Ages. When the Reformation reached Italy around 1540 and spread, Asolo, Bassano del Grappa and Cittadella became centers of Protestantism in the somewhat more tolerant Republic of Venice. After Napoleon's Italian campaign, Bassano became part of the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814). After changing affiliations, Bassano finally became part of the Kingdom of Italy, founded in 1861, in 1866 as a result of the so-called Third Italian War of Independence.
