Historical Description

Magnificent view of a monastery near Kharkiv (formerly Kharkov) in present-day Ukraine. During the 17th century, Kharkiv developed into an important centre of the historical region of Sloboda Ukraine. Numerous Orthodox monasteries and churches were established in the surrounding area, serving as important religious, cultural, and, in some cases, economic centres of the region. The view conveys an impression of the landscape around Kharkiv, characterized by forests and cultivated land, and reflects the important role played by Orthodox monasteries in the social and religious life of the period.
