Historical Description

Historical view of Tobolsk on the Irtysh River in Western Siberia, Russia. Founded in 1587, the city developed during the 17th and 18th centuries into one of the most important political, military, and commercial centres of the Russian expansion into Siberia. For a time the administrative capital of Siberia, Tobolsk occupied an important position on the trade and communication routes between European Russia and Central and Eastern Siberia. Its most prominent landmark is the Tobolsk Kremlin, dramatically situated on a hill above the Irtysh River.
