Pyne James Baker (1800-1870)

James Baker Pyne (born 5 December 1800 in Bristol and died 29 July 1870 in London) was a largely self-taught English landscape painter and was associated with the Bristol School. Pyne was not merely a landscape painter; he was also involved in the production of prints and illustrated publications.

Historical Description

The town was mentioned for the first time in 1353. At the latest in the 14th century, a stone castle was built here, which belonged to the Diósgyőr manor. After 1450 Tokaj was the property of the Hunyadi family, so when Matthias Corvinus came to the throne the town became royal property. In 1705 Francis II Rákóczi ordered the demolition of the castle. In the 20th century the town lost its importance and the status of a city. Its role in the wine trade was taken over by the town of Sátoraljaújhely. It was not until 1986 that the village was declared a town again.
