Historical Description | Monkeys (Simiiformes) are an infraorder of primates and rank among the most intelligent mammals on Earth. They are divided into New World monkeys (found in Central and South America) and Old World monkeys (found in Africa and Asia). The apes include gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, and gibbons. Monkeys live mainly in forests and, depending on the species, feed on fruits, leaves, seeds, insects, and small animals. Many species are known for their complex social behavior, high intelligence, and ability to use tools. With more than 500 known species, monkeys inhabit a wide range of tropical and subtropical environments around the world. |
