Historical Description | Marie Antoinette (1755–1793), the last Queen of France before the French Revolution, used the Petit Trianon at the Palace of Versailles as her private retreat from court life. Given to her by King Louis XVI in 1774, it became a place where she could escape the strict etiquette of the royal court. She redesigned the gardens in a more natural English style and created the Hameau de la Reine (Queen's Hamlet), a picturesque village where she enjoyed a simpler lifestyle with her family and close friends. Although Trianon became a symbol of elegance and refinement, it also attracted criticism from those who viewed it as a sign of royal extravagance. Today, the Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet are among the most visited attractions at the Palace of Versailles. |
